The Legacy of Art & Craft
Art is an essential expression of Uchucklesaht identity, history, and spirituality. Passed down through generations, traditional practices such as carving, weaving, and engraving carry the wisdom of our ancestors while evolving with contemporary influences. Each piece of art tells a story, honoring the land, the spirits, and the resilience of our people.
Carving: Cedar holds deep spiritual significance and has long been used to create totem poles, masks, canoes, and ceremonial items. Each carving reflects ancestral teachings, clan symbols, and sacred animals, serving as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds.
The Uchucklesaht Tribe Government offers a dedicated carving room equipped with all the essential tools and facilities to inspire creativity and craftsmanship. This thoughtful space in our Nucii building provides a safe, well-organized environment where artists and learners of all levels can explore traditional and modern carving and painting techniques.
Weaving: Cedar bark and plant fibers are carefully harvested and woven into intricate baskets, mats, and regalia.
The Nation actively supports the creation of public murals, totem poles, and installations that celebrate Uchucklesaht culture and educate others about our heritage.
Through our art, we honor our past, celebrate our present, and shape our future. The hands of our ancestors guide us, and the hands of our artists continue their legacy.
