Finding Renewal in HR

Human Resources Coordinator Andrew Silver, who also handles sales for Thunderbird Spirit Water, recently attended the annual CPHR BC & Yukon “Spark” Conference, which focused on leadership, belonging, and the future of workplace culture. Andrew’s experience reinforced the importance of thoughtful onboarding, belonging, and a people-first workplace culture.
Silver noted, “The opening session asked a question that stayed with me: Where is the HR for HR? It was a reminder that while we spend our days supporting employees, guiding change, and helping others navigate uncertainty, HR professionals also need space to learn, recharge, and feel connected”.
The conference explored how AI and human-centered leadership can work together to strengthen empathy, reflection, and decision-making while emphasizing the importance of connection and wellbeing within HR itself.
For UTG, this work supports a healthier organization, stronger service delivery, and a workplace culture that helps staff continue serving Ḥuučuqƛisʔatḥ citizens with care and consistency.
“The sessions explored the future of leadership, including how human strengths and AI can work together to enhance empathy, reflection, and decision-making. Speakers emphasized that AI doesn’t replace our humanity, it can help scale it when used thoughtfully and ethically”, pointed out Silver.
But the strongest spark came from the people. Sitting with HR professionals from across the province, sharing stories, and reconnecting with former colleagues reminded me that HR is a community built on care, curiosity, and compassion.
What’s next: Andrew hoped to bring these insights into UTG HR practices, with a focus on belonging, thoughtful onboarding, and exploring people-first ways to use AI to support our Nation’s workforce.
